I'm Going to Be on the Radio!

UPDATE: Well, I did it!  And wow, it looks like the recorded show is already available for listening! Currently it is on the This Week's Program tab at Up for Debate. I'm sure that by next week it will be at the Past Programs link as I mentioned below. If you listen to it, I'd love to hear what you think!

*****************

I was recently contacted by a major Christian radio broadcaster called Moody Bible Radio (a branch of Moody Bible Institute). They have a radio show called Up For Debate, which airs every Saturday morning, and they want me to be a featured speaker on one side of the topic, "Does God Expect Men to Be Leaders in Their Homes?" Of all the people who could cover the egalitarian side, they chose me! The other side is being taken by a guy named Carlton Arnold, who has a ministry of mentoring men and has written several books on how to apply the Bible to one's personal life, including God and Men: No Holds Barred.

The format is that we each get a short bio and then a presentation of our major talking points. Then we engage with each other, and then there's a call-in question and answer period. It's an hour-long show that begins at 8:00 am Chicago time. It's on live tomorrow-- the morning of May 17th. Because I'm on Pacific time, I have to be on the air at 6:00 am.!

For those who don't get a Moody Radio Station in your area, a recording will be available to listen to online at this link a week or two after the show.  There will be no regular blog post this Saturday morning, but I hope those of you who can, will tune in instead!

I'm very honored and proud to be chosen for this, and I hope those of my readers who pray will keep me in their prayers.

Well, it's over! And I think I did ok... Thanks for your support!

Kurk-- yes, I have posted the link to the Up For Debate archive page, where the broadcast will be posted for later listening. I'm not sure how long it will take for them to put it up. Probably a week or so. But the link is the last link above, where it says "online at this link."

You did a good job in the constructs of this interview, but the moderator interrupted you a lot and didn't listen to much of anything you said. She didn't let you answer a question before asking a new one. She also interrupted the other guest, but she interrupted you more. She gave him more airtime and kept referring to him as married for 46 years, a Christian leader among men and book author. You were referred to as a "woman blogger." Your long term marriage was never referred to. The other guest was gracious to you, but I didn't think the moderator was, though she treated the male guest with deference.

It wasn't really a topic "Up for Debate" or consideration of other ideas, as the program's title would imply. One of the more interesting points you raised was about cultural and historical context. Neither the guest nor the moderator addressed your point. They just moved on, not hearing what you were saying. I don't know if they were aware of this..

Thank goodness Linda phoned in to explain that "it just doesn't work." Imagine 50 years of misery because of this silly idea of male headship. It really upsets me. I got out after 30 years, but 50!! This kind of thing should not be happening. It is simply wrong.

Linda didn't say it didn't work. She said that unless the husband loves his wife like Christ loves the church, it didn't work. Then she said that her husband never listens to her, and started to cry. He probably wasn't listening to the program either, or he would have told her to get off the air. The idea I came away with from her, is that when the man in charge of the marriage it doesn't work because he generally takes the power and runs with it. But Linda may believe in complementarianism. It's hard to say without asking her.

She may well believe in complementarianism. I lived like that for 30 years. I just can't bear the thought that other women also live out this hell on earth. It's bad enough to be oppressed, but thinking that this is God's will for your life is an added grief.

A special welcome to my online friend and colleague Suzanne McCarthy, whom I admire very much. Thanks for stopping by!

I appreciate everyone's input on the issue raised by "Linda," one of the callers-in. My next post will address this further.

I heard it live, Kristen. I've just had such a busy week I couldn't get back to tell you.

You did a great job.
You were gracious, just like I knew you would be.
Carlton was also gracious which was refreshing.

And Linda's call shows exactly was is wrong with Carlton's position, no matter how gracious he is, no matter how hard he is on men to learn how to be gracious.
As long as it is taught that God places graceless men as despots over women, this makes God also look like an unjust despot.
Looking forward to your comment, Kristen.
Good to see you Suzanne.
